Dee's Review: I really enjoyed reading this cookbook from front to back and I haven't even tried any of the recipes yet! I'm quite sure my readers (menopausal women) will enjoy it because of the healthy aspects of the recipes. At this time in life, we all need something that is satisfactory to the tastebuds but gentle on the waistline. Each recipe gives the calorie count as well as the, fat, carbs, protein, etc., for those who are detail oriented (not me!). I enjoyed the humor (cartoons and clever writing) and the helpful tips and facts.

JUICY TOMATOES GUIDE TO RIPE LIVING AFTER 50 by Susan
Swartz
Jane Fonda, Judy Collins, and Isabel Allende are in their juicy years. So are a Midwest banker and Boston professor, a therapist who became a Mexican inn-keeper, an empty nester who took up Contra dancing.
Author Susan Swartz likes to call this model of the new fifty-plus woman a Juicy Tomato, someone who enjoys her lushness, and, to push the metaphor, squeezes the most from life. The generation of women who fought to have a career, guilt-free sex, and their say in all things now insists on the right to make the second half of life as meaningful and ground-breaking as the first.
Dee's Review: After reading this second book by Susan (see 1st below), I've realized that not only am I juicy AND ripe, I've been marinating long enough! No more excuses! I'm gonna get out there and LIVE! I would be happy to call any one of the women in this book, 'Sister.' Susan knows how to bring the 'juice' out of each of us!

In The Queen of My Self, Donna Henes proposes a completely original paradigm -- that of the midlife Queen, a woman in her prime who has achieved wisdom, mastery, and self-esteem -- that reflects more accurately the realities and needs of women today. Henes draws on history, mythology, and literature, her own life experience, as well as stories from women in many different societies, situations and stations to provide upbeat, practical, and ceremonial inspiration for all women who want to enjoy the fruits of an influential, passionate, and powerful maturity. Sexy Years : Discover the Hormone Connection: The Secret to Fabulous
Sex, Great Health, and Vitality, for Women and Men by SUZANNE SOMERS
Menopause is a complicated business. Medical issues vary widely and treatment options seem endless--especially in the wake of bad news about hormone replacement. While The Sexy Years isn't meant to supply you with a specific program of daily supplements, Suzanne Somers does offer an excellent inspiration to march forth and take control of this stage of health. Much of the book covers her own experience of menopause, including some detail on her breast cancer ordeal. She advocates the use of natural, bioidentical hormonal replacement, available through a variety of creams and supplements--it's a rare page that doesn't gush about the power of these substances or raise negative issues about the use of synthetic hormones. |

will make you feel like you've found some of your long lost girlfriends.
It's humorous and realistic and profound, all put together with a sense

CD that comes with the book that offers help with meditation and visualization.
A nice touch!

In "Honey, They Shrunk My Hormones" Caron Chandler Loveless uses humor, lots of it, to inspire and encourage women approaching or in the midst of midlife. Dee's

Greatest Experiment Ever Performed on Women: Exploding the Estrogen Myth
by Barbara Seaman In June 2002, a large, randomized study of a synthetic estrogen was stopped early because the risks to the postmenopausal women involved were outweighing the benefits, and many women who had been taking estrogen for years were left confused and angry. Seaman, a veteran women's health journalist (The Doctor's Case Against the Pill; Women and the Crisis in Sex Hormones), reminds readers that these findings are just the latest twist in the long and fascinating history of estrogen therapy. the Change : Taking Charge of Your Perimenopause
by Ann Louise Gittleman, Jonathan V. Wright With this essential do-it-yourself program, you can say good-bye to hormone havoc and sail through your perimenopause, the period of about ten years leading up to menopause, by understanding and controlling its symptoms. Dee's
Review: This book was written in 1999, but is getting new life after the
author was a guest on the Dr. Phil Show. Because Gittleman is a nutritionist,
her approach to hormonal issues have withstood the test of time. You still
have to be cautious about expecting everything she suggests to work for
everyone, but it's worth reading for sure!

| What
Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids : New Techniques and Therapies
--Including Breakthrough Alternatives to Hysterectomy
by Scott C. Goodwin, Michael S. Broder, David Drum
Two fibroid experts reveal the little-known facts about preventing and treating fibroid tumors--without surgery. Fibroid tumors are the leading reason why more than 500,000 American women have hysterectomies each year. Fibroids are benign tumors that arise from the smooth muscle layer of the uterus. As they grow larger, they can put pressure on neighboring organs and tissues, causing pain, bleeding, and fertility problems in many women. Unfortunately, many women are not informed of their full treatment options by their physicians. At last, leading experts in the field explain preventive strategies and treatment choices. This book takes readers step-by-step, detailing what every woman needs to know and describing up-to-date medical treatment options, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. Dee's
Review: Women have needed a book like this for YEARS so they could make
informed decisions about hysterectomies. It gives us information on options
and treatments other than surgery.

| The
Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing
During the Change by
Christiane Northrup
Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life. Dee's
Review: This book consistently gets mixed reviews (as did her appearance
on Oprah), but continues to be a favorite choice for women who are starting
to notice some symptoms. The most frequent complaint is that Northrup seems
a bit "new agey" and esoteric when coming from a medical doctor.
|
| Now updated with the latest
major medical studies, which raise troubling questions about estrogen replacement
for millions of women, No
Hormones, No Fear is an indispensable primer for women confronting
the thicket of conflicting information about whether or not to choose hormones
during menopause. Trisha Posner, through her own inspiring story, shows
that today’s modern women finally have choices and can empower themselves
by taking control of their health and lives.
Dee's
Note: In this updated version of Trisha's book, she has done a lot of work
for us by providing detailed information that will help each of us make
informed decisions about what to do to get our lives (and hormones) back
in balance.

The first book to explore the phenomenon of simultaneous female and male menopauses and how they often undermine stable relationships. In DOUBLE MENOPAUSE, Dr. Cetel explains that only recently was it discovered that men suffer their own version of a midlife change, and even the most solid relationship can crumble under the weight of hormonal change. Dee's

is playing havoc with relationships, I am very happy to see this book by
Dr. Cetel that will open the eyes of BOTH partners and could save many
marriages during the process!

This book will explain why women may be digging their grave with their own teeth when they eat a high carbohydrate, low protein diet and how stress and lack of sleep can make you fat. Dee's Review: Excellent, straight-forward information for those who are tired of the "beating around the bush" answers given by many doctors. Dr. Gillespie gives you an insight into why we gain weight in midlife and what we can do about it. |

Not Now, When? Reclaiming Ourselves at Midlife by
Stephanie Marston
Who am I really? What are my own real needs and dreams? And, if I'm not fulfilling them now, when will I? These are just some of the defining questions women between the ages of 40 and 55 are asking. Now, in one of the first books to address the spiritual, emotional, and psychological dimensions of this challenging life stage, family therapist Stephanie Marston will act as a midwife to make the rite of passage meaningful and transformative. Through examining the inspiring interviews of more than 100 women, the empowering message of this book is clear: midlife can be one of the most profoundly significant times in a woman's life. Dee's Review: Great book for helping each of us peel back the layers of who we were, how we became who we are in midlife and how to reclaim the core of who we want to be with total honesty and compassion. You WILL find yourself in this book. |
| Midlife
Can Be Murder by Jane
Isenberg
A great series for the midlife group! Here's one of the reviews from Amazon: "A reader from Long Beach, NY United States writes (about the 1st book, "Death in a Hot Flash"): This is the first Jane Isenberg book that I have read, but it won't be the last. She has a way of catching you at the very beginning and holding your interest until the last page. It's refreshing to find an entertaining sleuth "of a certain age" who has zany friends but yet has the same worries all women of this age have - worry about young adult children and aging parents. Her crotchety mother is a real kick and her boyfriend Sol is a winner. I can't wait to revisit the gang in the rest of the series. You will not be disappointed with this mystery. Note from Dee: This is GREAT so far! Reminds me of when I used to read Nancy Drew books! |
| Women
at the Well: The Many Voices of Menopause
by Frances Schwabenland and Marielena Zuniga You’ve read what the doctors have to say about menopause. You’ve heard the experts speak about “the change” on TV talk shows. Now it’s time to listen to the women themselves. Women at the Well: The Many Voices of Menopause is the only book of its kind to provide a voice for women on the printed page. In this compelling book, women share their firsthand stories of what it’s like – physically, emotionally and spiritually – to experience perimenopause and menopause. Dee's Review: Incredibly personal...you're sure to find a woman's story that you relate to, all with the overlying message that "you're not alone". Keep this one by your bedside! |
| Madame
Ovary's Midlife As An Art Form by Gail
Larsen is a delightful little collection of 19 stories representing universal
themes, from confronting the ravages of aging and the loss of parents to
finding magic and meaning in the second half of life. Madame
Ovary proclaims, "If the only fairy tale that has come true for you is
'the hair on your chinny chin chin', you'll love this book!"
Dee's
Review: Absolutely fabulous!! Every woman between 40 and 70 should read
this! I couldn't put it down because it was so "right on"!

| Cancer
Schmancer by
Fran Drescher
Drescher, most famous for her loud, nasal voice and her role on the 1990s TV series The Nanny, advises readers to "open a mouth" when dealing with their doctors in this down-to-earth account of her experience with uterine cancer. In the book, which serves as an unexpected follow-up to her 1995 memoir, Enter Whining, the actress describes living with symptoms for more than two years while shuttling from doctor to doctor without a diagnosis. Dee's Review: For each one of us who have dealt with doctors' nonchalant attitudes, this book is a MUST READ! Some reviewers have said there is too much information, but I thoroughly enjoyed every detail and couldn't put it down. Fran's conversational way of writing makes you feel like one of her closest friends. I was enraged, but also laughed and even cried (mostly about Chester). |
| Having laughed their way
through many of life's hurdles, Sydney Altman and Zoe Lazar, two middle-aged
women who have been best friends for forty years, decided that the best
way to approach the undeniability and undesireability of aging was to keep
laughing and get others to join in! Both Mother
Goose Tells The Truth About Middle Age and Victoria's
Rejects puts a humorous spin on the missteps and misfortunes of
aging.
Dee's
Review: You have not seen anything like these two books! If you love to
laugh hard and love to make others laugh with you (and not AT you), these
books are what you need!

by Valerie Harper I always enjoyed watching Harper on various TV shows and when I saw her talking about her book on the Today Show, I thought "Minnie Pauz" fans would probably enjoy this book! My complaint with this book is that they didn't ask permission to use my "Humor Replacement Therapy"TMor give me credit for it, although my site was listed as one of Valerie's favorites.
