For those of you who are just beginning this wonderful process, here we can narrow down the symptoms and ask questions like "am I starting perimenopause?"

thyroid problems & menopause

Postby oldcowgirl » Mon Jan 23, 2006 6:09 pm

I am 49 and had 2/3 of my thyroid out about 6 years ago.. I had been on the same level of synthroid for about 4 years, and everything was fine until this fall, I had started using an all natural balancing creme for my night sweats and general well being, when all of the sudden I was hyperthyroid, my DO (I live in a very rural area) cut my synthroid in 1/2, I went from hyper to hypo in a month, at that time I visited my gyn when it was about time to check my blood, she took one look at me and said you are hypothyroid I can tell by looking at you, and raised me back to 100... when my blood work came back, it had gone down from 20 to 8 and she raised me in 4 days to 125 again, back where I was when all this started. a month after being on the 125 I ended up going to the emergency room, palpations, flushing, my hands going numb, scaring me to death. The Dr there wanted to give me either beta blockers which scared me, or said I could take benedryl, so I did, the symptoms lasted 3 days, during which time I quit taking my thyroid medicine, 5 days after the er visit, I started back on 1/2 again, .44 for about a week, now up to .88 and was doing pretty good until today, and starting flushing and crawly feelings, no palpations yet, but enough I feel drained and weak. In the mean time I visited a Dr who said he specialized in endrocronoligy, he listened to all my symptoms, told me I was menopausal and to go to my gyn and wrote me a perscription for xanax which I haven't filled yet.
What I wonder about is the flushing every so often, like every 15 min or so and my neck gets tight and my hands feel numb~

I don't know how xanax could help your thyroid tho??? I'm wondering why your levels are bouncing around so much. You really do need this to be straightened out, I was off my levoxyl (my fault insurance and money) for awhile and experienced hypothyroid heart (VERY scary) and my levels went to 112, had a fabulous cardio guy and got it down to 8 then 3 quickly. I can't imagine how you're feeling and you may be going thru meno but why can't your TSH get steady? Did they give you any reasons? Is thie endo planning on following up? Did you feel confortable with the way the appt. went and the plan? Can you get another opinion? Let us know how things go please!

Dear OCG,

What a wild hormonal ride you are on! I don't know why you became hyperthyroid, but I do think that gentler adjustments to thyroid dose might've avoided some of this endocrine chaos. Synthroid comes in a host of doses, one tick down from .125 is .112 which might've corrected your imbalance without really throwing you off track.

Beta-blockers, originally designed for blood pressure control, are great symptom controlling meds for the hyperthyroid. They block the rapid heart rate and revved up body feelings of too much thyroid. Benadryl, an anti-histamine, is just sedating (although some women have opposite effect from it)--it's the main component of many over-the-counter sleeping pills.

Then, on top of all that, to start up with what sounds like hot flashes! Flushing and creepy crawly feelings definitely accompany these delightful episodes. Blood pressure can plummet, leaving you drained and weak.

Multiple doctors and very rural area is a disadvantage when dealing with overwhelming and scary symptoms. Hope you can gain knowledge and support here as you travel through perimenopause. Welcome.

I go back tommarrow to get my blood levels checked at the local D.O. No one has really seemed concerned about all of this. No I don't feel comfortable with the endrocronoligist specialist, I feel he blew me off. I think the balancing creme this summer made my thryoid levels off, from what I read about it now, it makes your body assimilate sp? that your thyroid is functioning, At first I thought I had a bad refill, is why I readily jumped back up to the 125 when my gyn perscribed it, she wanted to jump me up to 150 and I said no, I had never been on that high. I do hope I can find someone who will straighten it out, I have asked for a thyroid scan, that specialist felt my neck and said it was ok, it was wierd my glands were swelling off and on through the day, he blamed it on anxiety. something about the blood vessels constricting, with the hot flashes. What is wierd with the flushing is I don't sweat. I am an active person, live on a farm, take care of several animals, and enjoy being outside. Feeling bad is not in my agenda so to speak. This all just came on suddenly it seems, I have never had anxiety attacks before, and it all seemed symptomatic with the hyperthyroid phase I was going through. On the other hand, I may be hit with menopause hard, I remember I had very bad pms growing up, my mom used to complain about it alot, moody, crying, etc.. til I was on birth control pills for like almost 20 years.
But thanks for your replies!!! I feel like I am not getting any help around here. It is scary!!!

So this is the latest, my DO said my thyroid levels were a little high again and to start back on the .100 Today I had terrible symptoms, and sudden outbursts of crying, that was a first. I ended up going to an ER cardioligist clinic in Muskogee, the next biggest town by where we live. The Dr there listened to me and again said menopause, perscribed Beta blockers and xanax.
