Enlarged Thyroid and Soy

For those of you who are just beginning this wonderful process, here we can narrow down the symptoms and ask questions like "am I starting perimenopause?"

Enlarged Thyroid and Soy

Postby Hopefully » Thu Dec 28, 2006 11:16 am

There appears to be so much controversy about using soy products that I'm not sure what to do.

I'm have so much joint pains and stiffness since going through perimenopause that I'm wondering if drinking a glass of organic soy milk everyday would help...somewhat...with all these aches and pains...but then I've read that people with thyroid ailments should stay away from soy products.

BTW I'm not on any thyroid med. because my internal medicine doctor doesn't feel that it's necessarry at this time. In the meanwhile we are just "monitoring" the situation.

Any suggestions, input, evidence? Thanks so much ladies.

Some doctors recommend the soy, but that's for you and your doc to decide. Another one of those decisions we have to make...whew! It gets tiring and frustrating, doesn't it? :)

Aboutthyroid.com has alot of good info re: thyroid (hypo/heper etc)... according to the info I've read soy can inhibit the absorption of thyroid meds....as can iron supplements and some foods. I've not heard of it being detrimental as far as the thyroid in general goes as long as meds aren't being taken. Hope that helps some.

I wish I knew what was up with soy.. I've read so many places that say it is NOT helpful so I don't know what to think...
