Question (and answer) about pap smears

Do I still need to get Pap tests after I've begun menopause?

Yes, it is wise to continue to get a Pap test every two years from age 18 to 70. (Women over 70 can cease Pap test screenings if they've had two normal tests in the previous five years.) Pap tests allow cellular abnormalities to be caught early, and that reduces your risk of developing cervical cancer by up to 90 percent. Three out of four women who develop cervical cancer have not had a Pap test in the five years before their diagnosis. The screening is simple, it's usually painless and it saves lives. Regardless of whether a woman is sexually active or is still having periods, the Pap test is still valuable. And don't forget to continue your mammograms and breast self-exams.
