How long do the symptoms last?

The menopausal experience is very individualized and variable.

The symptoms occur from the falling and surging of the hormones, and particularly from the withdrawal of estrogen. Some 10 percent of menopausal women abruptly cease their periods and bypass any signs of perimenopause. The average duration is up to four years.

A minority of others experience symptoms up to six years or even longer. However, one study of 25 women followed over a three year period found that the average duration of the hot flash experience was between eight and nine years, and hot flashes have been reported in women in their 60s and 70s.

Joan Starker, Ph.D., MSW, a clinical social worker since 1970, has spent much of her career helping individuals cope with normal life transitions such as midlife and menopause. A member of the North American Menopause Society, she is on the advisory board of the Oregon Menopause Network.
