Mid cycle 'events' ?

Postby sandra43 » Sun Apr 24, 2011 8:43 am

Hi there,

I'm a 43 (nearly 44) year old woman and have been experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms for the last 3 years or so- longer heavier periods, shorter cycles, lighter periods, skipped periods, hot flushes, night sweats, palps, panic attacks, insomnia etc etc.

I've read loads of good advice on this site and have consulted my doctor about bleeding in between cycles. It can be light spotting for a day or two or heavier, anything from brownish discharge to a period-like blood stain. My cycles are very erratic and the only pattern to this bleeding is that it seems to occur around the time when I ovulate.

My GP was sceptical that I could be pre-menopausal as I was 'too young'- my mum had the same symptoms from the age of 37 and didn't reach menopause until she was 50. :(

I don't like the idea of HRT so have consulted a herbalist and am now taking a supplement which helps with the night sweats and means that I can sleep through the night :D -yay !

My question is have other ladies suffered with bleeding between periods and is the normal for someone of this age ?
Should I worry ?

This happened to me before but then stopped for many months. I'm reluctant to visit a gynae as don't fancy the tests....

any tips or advice gratefully received :)

Hi Sandra! Welcome to the forum.....I'm sorry to say this but your gyn needs to get up with the times. Too early for peri-menopause??? My periods completely stopped when I was 41 or 42 and I never had another period. Now fortunately I didn't have the problem with the spotting, etc., but you're well within the range to be starting the process of "changing".

If there's any way possible to see a certified menopause specialist or a menopause clinic, that would be your best bet.

Hi Dee,

Many thanks for your speedy reply :)

I've read loads on this forum and elsewhere on the net (and spoken to girlfriends) and I'm convinced this is all peri-menopausal stuff. Fortunately my herbalist (another sensible lady) is of the same opinion as me which was reassuring.

Forgot to say I'm over here in the UK so not sure if we have menopausal clinics but I could certainly look for private gynae to consult-strangely enough that thought had never occurred to me ( that would be the memory thing then- :D )

Having resigned myself to heavy periods at the turn of the year, the past cycle has been almost a non-event-heigh ho-never a dull moment being a woman is there ?!!

Thanks again-good to know you ladies are out there.

It does sound like 90% of the women when they start going through it, but being a cartoonist instead of a doctor, I don't like to try to diagnose anyone! :) I don't know if this information is still valid, but you might find it useful: http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/about.php

Best of luck! and hang in there with us!
