Like thousands of women across the country who are entering mid-life and
experiencing the
first signs of menopause, actress and director, Joanna Kerns looks forward
to Act II in life.
As she begins this next phase, Joanna, a spokesperson for HEALTHY WOMAN®
Soy
Menopause Supplement, embraces the exciting new changes in her life.
Best known as Maggie Seaver, the wife and mother from the hit sitcom Growing
Pains,
Joanna has enjoyed a rewarding career in television. She portrayed the
spirited journalist,
Maggie Seaver, for seven years from 1985 to 1992. During and after her
tenure with Growing
Pains Joanna starred in over 20 network movies-of-the week and TV series,
many of which
dealt with emotionally-charged topics. Her TV movie credits, include, among
others,
"Emma’s Wish," "Whose Daughter is She" and "Not In My Family."
Today, armed with a new passion and years of wisdom and experience, Joanna
is embarking
on a new career as a director and writer. She's flexing her talent, creativity
and vision
directing episodes of Ally McBeal, The Practice, and Boston Public, programs
that all
showcase strong and inspirational women. Joanna is also directing a made-for-TV-movie
that will be released in 2001. Additionally, Joanna is a partner in two
production companies.
Joanna’s success in front of and behind the camera comes to no surprise
to family, friends
and colleagues. Growing up as one of four siblings in a middle class neighborhood
in
Northern California’s Santa Clara Valley, Joanna was highly motivated and
dedicated to her
goal of becoming an Olympic gymnast (incidentally, her sister is noted
swimmer and sports
commentator, Donna de Varona). However, after a serious knee injury at
the Olympic trials,
Joanna turned her attentions to dancing and acting, which eventually led
her to career as a
TV and movie actress.
Her newest venture as spokesperson for HEALTHY WOMAN® Soy Menopause
Supplement is symbolic of her successful and highly satisfying lifestyle.
This vivacious
forty-something cherishes close relationships with her husband, architect,
Mark Appleton,
and her daughter, a recent grad from New York University. Her interest
in sports and fitness
has continued through the years - in fact, Joanna is now an avid golfer!
But perhaps, most
important to her HEALTHY WOMAN® lifestyle, Joanna takes a leading role
in her finances
and has done so ever since an eye-opening experience with financial difficulties
earlier in
her career.
Fortunately Joanna learned early on that a woman needs to tend to her financial
health to
ensure a sound, stable and worry-free lifestyle later in life. Having enrolled
in an adult
education class called “Financial Management for Women” years ago, Joanna
now
participates in all aspects of her finances. Unlike in years past when
she relied on business
managers and agents, Joanna now personally consults with her stockbroker
about mutual
funds, stocks and investments, and confers with her accountant about budget
management
and taxes. She knows where her money is and makes it work for her.
Joanna’s HEALTHY WOMAN® Lifestyle Tips:
As Joanna gracefully approaches her menopausal years, she proudly proves
that this time
in life doesn’t signify the end, but rather the beginning of a whole new
lifestyle filled with
endless possibilities! Below, she shares insightful tips and advice for
women who want to
create a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle during and after menopause:
Financial Freedom
Take control of your finances! If you aren’t already building a portfolio,
start now.
Rest assured that you will have enough money to support a comfortable lifestyle
well into your golden years. Enroll in a finance management course or make
an
appointment with a financial advisor.
Life's Little Indulgences
Treat yourself to little indulgences. Your body will be going through many
changes
over the next few years, so go ahead and splurge on a relaxing massage,
luxurious
bath oils or a deluxe pedicure.
Talent Search
Discover your latent talents. Did you love to draw as a child? Do friends
and family
comment on your singing voice? Why not sign up for an art class or try
singing
lessons to develop your talents and creativity?
Spousal Arousal
Confide in your spouse and rekindle that intimacy you shared before the
hustle and
bustle of kids, car pools and mortgage payments. Let him know you need
his
support and understanding more than ever. Join a “couples” activity that
will keep
you close and you can both enjoy like sailing or ballroom dancing.
Career Pathing
Investigate a new career change or give your current career a jump-start
by meeting
with a career advisor. Learn how to translate hobbies such as photography,
scrapbooking or cooking into a new rewarding career!
Jocks Rock
It’s your turn on the playing field. Say good-bye to the spectator “soccer-mom”
and
become a sports buff. Try golf or tennis lessons, join a local softball
league or sign
up for in-line skating classes.
Fuel Up
Fuel up on healthful, nutritious foods that will support your active day.
If you can’t
always eat well every day, make sure to include a multi-vitamin into your
daily
routine.
Charity Challenge
Volunteer for a local or national charity that has meaning to you or a
loved one. It’s
a great social networking outlet and gives you a new perspective on the
blessings in
your own life. Challenge yourself and others to take a time-out from today’s
fast-paced life and make a contribution to your community.
Get Your Hands Dirty
Get close to nature and get your hands dirty! Start a garden - whether
it’s on the
sunny windowsill in your kitchen or in the back yard, tending to a garden,
floral or
vegetable, is both relaxing and rewarding.
