The Only
"Monthly Arrival" You Can Count on in MidLife!
Dear
Minnie Pauz Fans,
Just like those of you who were beginning
to wonder if your period was going to come this month, I was wondering
if I was going to be able to deliver this newsletter! I was having a few
"issues", some of which involved pain in my fingers and it's been difficult
to type! Part of the problem was arthritis, which you might think that's
because I'm getting older (ahem!), but it's got more to do with psoriasis
and a type of arthritis that can afflict even young people who have the
condition. The other problem, and thank goodness it was my left hand, was
that I had a spot removed and ended up with 5 stitches that I didn't expect.
Well, that's all I'm going to complain
about in this issue! Lucky you!! My point is that with all stages of menopause,
we're going to have times when we just can't do everything we used to do,
especially at the same pace. I hear from so many women who are trying to
manage the same hectic level of activities as usual and are having a tough
time doing it. I just want to let you know that it's not YOU, it's most
likely your hormones that are slowing you down! Join us on the message
board and create your own journal to post your feelings!
When you're starting to feel overwhelmed
click this
button and let it take you to a happy place, even if it's just for a few
minutes. If any of you have pictures (or description) of places that "take
you away", send
them to me and I'll post them on the retreat page!
Here's
one of our newest Minnie
Moments, sent in by Ace: "I thought it was bad enough when I drove
off with the attendant still trying to pump gas into my van. Then
the next week I put loaded all of my groceries into the van and went off,
leaving my purse in the cart! I didn't even realize it was gone for
30 minutes! Thankfully, when I went back to the store, a good Samaritan
had turned it in and I didn't lose so much as one penny. I just wish
someone would return my brain!"
According to the Women's Heart
Foundation, more than 70 percent of women
who have heart attacks don't experience
any chest pains -- only fatigue.

Vitamin D Deficiency and
Inflammation in Women
For women, running low on
vitamin D can lead to inflammation, which in turn can negatively affect
the immune system. A University of Missouri study is the first to report
a correlation between increased concentrations of an inflammatory marker
called serum TNF-a and vitamin D deficiency in healthy women. This investigation
may shed some light on the role vitamin D plays in preventing certain diseases
associated with inflammation, including cardiovascular disease. Normally,
increased inflammatory markers are seen in obese individuals or those with
chronic diseases. Researcher Catherine Peterson, an assistant professor
at the University of Missouri, said her study results support the need
to re-examine the biological basis for the dietary reference intake (DRI)
for vitamin D. The current guidelines are now being evaluated and may be
revised to reflect new findings that relate vitamin D levels to the incidence
of various diseases including some types of cancer and such auto-immune
diseases as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Peterson plans
to investigate the effectiveness of vitamin D in reducing disease symptoms
and in reducing blood sugar levels in diabetics......Dr. Weil

Recent studies have suggested
that red and purple grape juices may provide the same heart-healthy benefits
of red wine, including:
-
Reducing the risk of blood clots
-
Reducing low-density lipoprotein
(LDL, or "bad") cholesterol
-
Preventing damage to blood vessels
in your heart
-
Helping maintain a healthy blood
pressure
Both red wine and grape juice
also contain antioxidants called flavonoids, which have been shown to increase
your high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol and lower your
risk of clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), and may help lower blood pressure.
